Muriel Bowser

Office
Running for Mayor (Incumbent) of Washington, DC (2018)

Biography
Board of Supervisors President London Breed recently served as Acting Mayor, leading San Francisco following the tragic passing of Mayor Edwin Lee.

Muriel Bowser brings a pragmatic, hands-on approach to leadership, legislation, oversight, and policy‐making in the District of Columbia. A fifth-generation Washingtonian, she was first elected Ward 4 Councilmember in a special election in 2007, re-elected in 2008, and again in 2012. Each time, voters endorsed Muriel’s ambitious agenda focused on an open and ethical government, rebuilding quality neighborhoods, and transforming our schools and commercial corridors. On April 1, 2014, Muriel was elected to be the Democratic Nominee for Mayor of the District of Columbia.

During Councilmember Bowser’s tenure, Ward 4’s population has grown, quality school choices and public spaces have increased, and hundreds of units of housing have been created. Dozens of new stores, restaurants, and small businesses have opened and violent crime has plummeted.

Muriel’s tireless efforts previously won her the endorsement of the Washington Post editorial board, which wrote: “Smart, hardworking and independent-minded, Ms. Bowser has shown herself to be an effective advocate for the interests of her demanding ward and a leading voice for education reform and good government.”

Councilmember Bowser, a native Washingtonian, earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Chatham College and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from American University. Muriel began her service in DC elective office as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for her Riggs Park neighborhood, and continues to be an active member of Lamond Riggs Citizens Association.

Priorities

School Reform

Muriel will expand early childhood learning opportunities to give our kids a strong foundation for kindergarten—and the years ahead. She will invest in quality feeder schools, so that our middle schoolers are prepared for the rigors of higher learning. And she’ll enhance our children’s preparation for the workforce with quality career and technical educational programs.

For teachers and students, she’ll provide the resources and flexibility to increase instructional time, and provide additional resources to schools with innovative programs found to be effective in significantly advancing academic growth.

Infrastructure

Muriel will drive infrastructure investment by initiating creative solutions like public/private partnerships that will allow greater flexibility and increased revenues while protecting the interests of DC’s residents.

Improved Government

Muriel will seek cabinet members, employees and others who possess both substantial credentials in a professional discipline but also a solid grounding in ethical management and decision-making. Good judgment will be a hallmark of Bowser Administration officials at all levels, their actions will be held to the highest standards of ethical behavior and management.

Economic Fairness

Muriel will work to make sure that all of DC’s residents can find sustainable employment that allows them to succeed by increasing the city’s minimum wage, working to increase educational opportunities beyond just 4-year degree programs and providing incentives for businesses to move into the District and flourish.
